Whether you're growing a mango tree outdoors or indoors, the process for growing mango seeds is the same, says Steve Jones, director of horticultural collections at the United States Botanical Garden.
1. Wrap the seeds in a damp paper towel.
2. Place the seeds in a small bag and seal. Place the bag in a warm, dark place until it sprouts (germinates).
3. Once sprouts appear, fill a 3- to 4-inch pot with well-draining soil.
4. Place the germinated seeds on top of the soil and cover with additional soil. Move the pot to a sunny location and water it thoroughly.
Ideal conditions for growing mango seedlings
You need to provide ideal growing conditions for your mango seedlings to thrive.
Sun
Mango seeds prefer to be stored in a bright place, but should not be exposed to direct sunlight until ripe. “If indoors, get south-facing windows that let in lots of light,” she says, Jones. “If you’re outside, filter out the sunlight.” A fully mature mango tree needs at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight.
Earth
Mango seeds can tolerate almost any type of soil as long as it drains well. Soil pH levels range from acidic to neutral to alkaline. It is not a picky plant when it comes to soil preferences.
Temperature
Because it is a tropical plant, it grows in warmer, wetter areas. “Mangoes grow best at temperatures between 65 and 90 degrees,” says Jones. “Warmth is important in the summer when fruit is grown.” Mangoes are hardy in growing zones 9 through 11.
