Making your own chicken feed is a cost-effective way to ensure that you know exactly what your chickens are eating. If you prefer organic food for your chickens, you can use organic ingredients in these recipes. There are two recipes provided - one for laying hens and one for broiler hens. Both recipes are high in protein and nutrients to keep your chickens healthy.

1. To make the chicken feed

Measure and combine the ingredients in a container. The ingredients include whole maize meal, soya, fish meal, maize bran, and limestone powder. This recipe makes a large batch of 220 pounds (100 kg) of feed, so you will need a big container to mix and store it. If you want organic feed, purchase the ingredients from a bulk goods store or a farm shop.

2. Once the ingredients are in the container

Mix them thoroughly. Use a shovel to stir the feed until all the ingredients are evenly distributed. It's important to ensure that the different ingredients are well mixed so that the chickens receive all the necessary nutrients. This may take a few minutes, especially for a large batch. You can also use a spade for mixing if the batch is very large.

3. When it comes to feeding the chickens

Give each chicken 0.28 pounds (0.13 kg) of feed per day. Multiply this amount by the number of chickens you have to determine the total feed needed. You can either place the feed in a feeder or sprinkle it on the ground in front of the chickens. If you choose to use a feeder, simply pour the feed into the top and let it trickle down into the feeding plate. You can purchase a feeder from a farm store or make your own.

4. To store the chicken feed

Find a cool and dry place such as a garage or barn. Before giving the feed to the chickens, check for any signs of contamination such as mice, bugs, or mold. If the feed is contaminated, it's best to discard it. If you don't have a shed, make sure to cover the container with a lid and keep it away from direct sunlight. The feed can be stored for up to 6 months.
